WHICH INSTRUMENTS ARE TAUGHT IN 5TH GRADE BAND

  • The elementary band offers flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, trombone, baritone, and percussion. Additional advanced instruments such as French horn, tuba, bass clarinet, baritone saxophone, and tenor saxophone are available once your student reaches 6th-grade band. However, students are encouraged to stick with the instrument they learned in 5th grade or transition to one that uses the same skills that they learned in 5th grade. For example, the baritone and tuba are very similar making this an easy transition. Flute and french horn are nothing alike. They use completely different skills. Making this transition would be nearly impossible as your student would have to start back at the beginning whereas the goal is to build on what we learn each year instead of starting over.
