DOES MY CHILD NEED PRIOR MUSICAL EXPERIENCE TO BE IN BAND?
Posted by:NO! While prior experience is helpful regardless of the activity, in band students learn how to play their instrument from the very beginning. We will teach your child everything they need to know, step by step. From how to assemble and care for the instruments to reading notes and rhythms, we will guide your child through the process. All that is needed from you is an enthusiastic attitude and patient ears when your child comes home and makes their first sound.

WHEN DOES BAND MEET AND HOW MUCH TIME DOES BAND TAKE UP OUTSIDE OF THE SCHOOL DAY?
Posted by:Band is a class just like art, physical education, or math. With the exception of a few concerts throughout the year, we meet during the school day, 3 times each week, during specials. Your student will attend other specials on the other two days during the week. We also ask that your student finds a little time outside of class to practice at home...Think of it as musical homework, but much more fun.

CAN MY CHILD ALSO BE INVOLVED IN SPORTS, DANCE, AND/OR OTHER ACTIVITIES WHILE ENROLLED IN BAND?
Posted by:Generally, Yes! We have many students that are involved in these activities and band!
Aside from a few concerts, band has limited after-school activities. We will have three required concerts (one in December, March, and May). Dates will be sent out well in advance of these performances. There will be additional performance opportunities available if your student is interested in performing for more than the 3 concerts.

HOW MUCH DOES AN INSTRUMENT COST?
Posted by:The costs associated with band depend on which instrument your child chooses and if you already own an instrument. You can also rent or purchase a quality new or preowned instrument from a local music store at a very reasonable price. If not, if financial constraints prevent you from being able to do this, please contact me and allow me to help. We wish funds were available for us to provide every child with an instrument. However, this is simply not possible. The school may have a baritone or trombone available for at school use in this situation. No other instruments will be provided. However, we will not let instrument availability or financial constraints keep your child from participating. We want every student to be able to participate in band and will make every effort to make this happen.
If you have a question or concern about a particular instrument, please feel free to contact Mrs. Cregar. You will also find an instrument guide on the instrument page here. -
WHAT IF I AM UNSURE IF I WANT MY CHILD TO DO BAND?
Posted by:You’ve always said, “try it before you decide you don’t like it.” Band is the same way! Your child should sign up for band even you or they are unsure. It is much easier to drop something after trying it, rather than join later after everyone else has already started.
Playing catch up can be very difficult. Data has shown that students who start band late are less likely to enjoy playing an instrument because they feel that they are not as successful or talented as their peers. This is simply not true! They are just behind and this can be a very difficult hurdle for them to overcome.
